Daniel H. Lam's Obituary
Dr. Daniel H. Lam passed away Wednesday, August 8, 2007 in Houston at the age of 85 years. Dr. Lam was born January 12, 1922 in Hong Kong to the late Lam Chi Fung and Chan Chik Ting.
Dr. Lam was a devout Christian and businessman, banker, educator, and a prominent community leader in Hong Kong during the fifties to the eighties when the city was in its formative years of becoming a world trade hub. He had led annual Hong Kong Trade Delegations to Europe, Australia and East Asia through the 1960’s.
Dr. Lam was a manufacturer and made flashlights and batteries for Ray O Vac Company based in the United States. He was an active director of the family bank. Aside his own business, Dr. Lam was the Board Chairman for the Hong Kong Baptist College which is now Hong Kong Baptist University. He was instrumental in increasing facilities for secondary as well as tertiary education in Hong Kong.
In spite of his busy life, Dr. Lam served faithfully in the Kowloon City Baptist Church as a deacon, and in other Christian organizations. He was elected President of the Hong Kong Baptist Convention in 1979 to 1981.
Dr. Lam received numerous Recognitions and Honors. These included; Justice of the Peace (J.P.) conferred by the Governor of Hong Kong in 1964; Officer of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) conferred by Her Majesty the Queen of England in 1972. Honorary Doctor of Law (LL.D.) conferred by Baylor University in Texas, USA. Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent of the British Empire (C.B.E.) conferred by Her Majesty the Queen of England in 1986.
Dr. Lam and his wife Juanita retired to the United States in 1977 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. The initially lived in Palos Verde, California but moved to Pearland, Texas in 2000. Mrs. Juanita Lam passed away in 2005. They were married for 58 years.
Dr. Lam’s family includes; Dorothy and Dai Shan Wong, and daughter Alison, of Houston, Daniel and Rosa Lam and Daniel’s daughter Jennifer, of Pearland, Anita and Dr. Edson Cheung and daughter Mia, of Dallas, and Denise and Dr. Lesley Luk and daughters Lauren and Estelle.
A celebration of Dr. Lam’s life was held at 5:00 PM Saturday, August 11, 2007, in the chapel of Clayton Funeral Home, 5530 W. Broadway in Pearland, with Rev. Franklin Lee and Edward Wong officiating. A private interment was held at Mount Olivet Cemetery, in Dickinson.
