Debbie Savage
Q: How did you meet Elizabeth?
A: I first met Beth at Austin High School. She taught business classes. She was on the third floor of the A wing and therefore not on my radar – but she got there fast. The A lounge was a teacher lunch room and she was there at lunch. She was cute and funny and always in a good mood. I remember when she was chosen to be on the jury for a trial that was supposed to last a long time, she prepared instructions for the substitute teacher that filled a notebook binder, really detailed and specific. I had so much admiration for that level of preparation. I was young then myself but not so easily impressed. The next time Beth was on my radar – besides the parties and dinners we frequented, the students we shared, the administrators we befriended and occasionally confounded, was when she met Ed. Or Ed met her. They would eat lunch in the lounge, at first with all of us, but they later moved to the table by the window and the rest of us on the couches learned to leave them alone. They were the topic of lounge gossip and speculation for a while. I loved the fact that he loved her. And Ed was one of the good guys. Still is.
I met Becky years later when we got together for dinners and lunches with Austin teachers. She was always willing to drive and joined in with our conversations like she had always known us. I am so grateful.
