George Weldin Sandars' Obituary
George Weldin Sandars passed away in Houston, Texas, on Wednesday, May 6th, 2026, at the age of 88. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold Weldin Sandars and Lola Mae (Pullin) Sandars. Left to cherish George’s memory are his loving wife of 63 years, Ruby Lee Sandars; son, Geoffrey Sandars and wife Bonne; daughter, Stephanie Cordes and husband Josh; brother, Bill Sandars; sister, Mary Sandars; grandchildren, Christopher Sandars, Kyle Sandars, Lorelei Cordes, and Lauren Cordes; along with a host of many other family and friends.
George grew up in Taft, Texas, where early on he learned the value of hard work, service, and faith which would guide him throughout his life. He attended Texas A&M University, graduating in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, and remained an Aggie at heart, proudly “bleeding maroon.” While at A&M, he was a member of the Fighting Texas Aggie Band, an experience he remembered with pride and gratitude.
Following graduation, George devoted more than 37 years to NASA as a structural engineer, contributing to some of the nation’s most significant space programs, including Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, the Space Shuttle, and the Space Station. He took great pride in work that demanded precision, integrity, and perseverance, and he considered it an honor to play a part in milestones that inspired generations.
A longtime resident of Pearland, George cared deeply about the community he called home. He was a life member of the Pearland Lions Club, serving as secretary and president, and served on the Brazoria County Appraisal Board along with the Pearland Economic Development Corporation. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter, but above all he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. A man of deep Christian faith, he taught Sunday school for more than 40 years, participated in mission work, and sang in the church choir. Known as a cheerful giver, he lived his faith through steady kindness and generosity. George will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A visitation will take place on Thursday, May 14th, 2026, at Clayton Funeral Home of Pearland, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The following day, Friday, May 15th, George’s funeral service will be held at Redeemer Church in Manvel, Texas, commencing at 4:00 pm. Interment will take place on Saturday, May 16th, at Bethel Cemetery in Odem, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, George’s family requests that donations be made to Texas Lions Camp through the Pearland Lions Club, or to the Vic Coppinger YMCA.
