Wayne & family, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Your dad was truly a very sweet and special man.
So sorry to just learn of the Chief's passing. He and Nelda were very special people to us and we are so saddened by the loss. LaPorte was a better place for having them here. We will cherish all our fun times with them. Our prayers are with you.
Although prevented from attending the service by illness, I will be there in spirit for the family of the man who gave me my start in my career as an officer for the City and people of La Porte. Chief Freeman hired me as a Patrolman in October of 1976 and I retired as a Lieutenant in June of 2007. I will be forever thankful for his help and guidance and friendship.
IN JANUARY 1975, I BECAME A RESERVE OFFICER FOR CHIEF FREEMAN. FOUR YEARS LATER, HE HIRED ME AS A FULL TIME OFFICER. WE HAD 3 PATROL CARS FOR THE CITY OF LA PORTE WHEN I STARTED, THOSE WERE THE DAYS. HE WAS A GREAT BOSS, A GOOD FRIEND, AND SOMEONE THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET. 31 YEARS 5 MONTHS LATER I AM STILL WORKING FOR LA PORTE P.D BECAUSE HE GAVE ME A CHANCE TO BE ONE OF LA PORTE FINEST. THANKS AGAIN CHIEF - I WILL MISS YOU...
my deepest sympathy to the family
Herby will be missed, but he his home with Nelda now. Our deepest sympathy and prayers go out to the Freeman Family in your time of sorrow.

Barry & Stacy Evans
I'm so very sorry to hear this. Herb was a wonderful man and will be missed by so many. I had the pleasure of working with him for 5 years and always enjoyed his wonderful sense of humor. My heart goes out to the entire family and all the friends that loved him so much.
My prayers and thoughts are with all of you.
You are all in our prayers during this time of grief. I am sure Nelda welcomed Herbie with open arms.

Herb Freeman was serving as La Porte's Chief of Police in January, 1984 when he gave me my chance to enter the law enforcement profession. He pinned my badge on me as a snot nosed rookie and said, "go get the bad guys out there." I always looked up to him and he was always the "CHIEF" to me. A great man, who will be sorely missed in my book. My condolances to the family.
