Sandra Kay Powell's Obituary
Sandra Kay Powell 81, passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2021. Kay was preceded in death by her
parents Zeb Reeves Jr. and Mollie Hazel Sanders Reeves, and loving husband of 48 years, Bobby
Lee Powell. Left to cherish her memory are her children; Jay Carruth and wife Lisa, and Kelly
Deardorff and husband Steve, grandchildren; Robby Holland, Jake Holland and wife Taylor and
Jaymee Carruth, brother; Zeb Felder Reeves III and wife Lila.
After graduating from McComb High School in 1958, Kay spent two years at the University of
Mississippi also known as Ole Miss. She went on to complete her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in
Elementary Education at the University of Houston Clear Lake. In 1961, she spent a year
working for Delta Airlines as a stewardess traveling the world. In 1972, she married her
childhood sweetheart, Bobby Lee Powell and moved to La Porte, Texas. Kay went to work for
the La Porte School District in 1973 and retired in 2000 after serving 28 years teaching 3rd grade
and 8th grade Language Arts. Kay was very dedicated to La Porte Independent School District,
her students and to the City of La Porte. She spent her leisure time enjoying her family,
watching Oilers, Texans or Ole Miss football and Astros baseball on TV. Kay also loved painting,
crocheting and attending her grandchildren’s activities. Monthly trips to Lake Charles with
Bobby was something she also enjoyed. Kay will be extremely missed by her children and all the
lives she touched in her lifetime.
Services for Kay will be: Visitation Tuesday, January 19th from 6:00 -8:00 PM at the Clayton Funeral
Home, 201 S 3 rd St. La Porte TX. The service will be Wednesday January 20 th at 10:00 AM at the
First Baptist Church of Pasadena 7500 Fairmont Parkway Pasadena Texas. Internment will
follow at the Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to; MD Anderson
Cancer Center or the charity of your choice.
