One of my favorite memories with Sawyer Updike was when the big freeze happened in Texas. The day the freeze started it was my birthday and that night Sawyer and I had spent the night at Conner Ulsh’s house. At around 1am we checked the whether because it was freezing inside as well as out. When we opened our phones we saw that it was supposedly snowing, so we went outside to see. It was amazing to go outside at 1am on my birthday and for it to be snowing. We were out there so long playing in the snow that our hair started to get moist from fallen snowflakes and then freeze making our hair feel like it had hair gel in it. The next morning we decided to go meet up with Wyatt Deluca and Sam post, but the roads were iced so we couldn’t drive, so we walked instead. On the way we found multiple patches of ice where we tried to ice skate across, where we all ended up falling and getting soaking wet. We later went to my house and I wanted to make fried rice, but Sawyer insisted that he make it. We were all huddled around the grill to keep us warm while I have Sawyer step by step instructions on how to make fried rice, since at this point he had never made it before. My mom had picked up an ice cream cake for desert the day before, but since everyone’s power was out the freezer was warming up, so she decided to put the cake outside in the snow to keep it cold, which honestly worked. We then went back to Conner’s to see if he might have had his power back on, but we were out of luck. Later that night Grace Powell and Ashlyn McKinney came over and we were all huddled together in my room with at least 7 blankets trying to keep each other warm. West played go fish until we got tired and then watched avatar to finish the night. That whole well school had gotten canceled and the few of us hung out every day trying to find things to do since none of us had consistent power, due to the rolling blackouts. Although it was a lot of cold nights and that there was almost nothing to do during that week, it was one of the most fun birthday experiences I have ever had and I am glad that I got to spend it with Sawyer.
