You know when your thoughts go to a person that was instrumental in your life a long time ago? I was just thinking of Shirley and discovered she had passed. I was a new nurse many years ago, (30 years!) I had just had my first child and was told when I came back to work I would be assigned to “Mother Maples” floor. I was nervous because I had heard she ran a tight ship. I was so pleasantly surprised to meet the most wonderful, humble and caring human being ever. She always had my back and was a terrific teacher. She spoke so fondly of her boys and her husband Tom. To her sons, I am so sorry for your loss. The world has lost a beautiful person. However; Heaven now has gained a lovely angel. God Bless!

Shirley, we certainly shared some interesting times while our husbands served at Fort Huachua, Arizona. Our husbands golfing buddies. It is there that we met . We traded babysitting with each other and as couples, fun get togethers. Toby had Lisa, Todd had Michael and Chip now Tom had Chris. You made undoubtably the very best oatmeal raisen cookies in this world. I will never forget the day I came back from shopping to be greeted by you with a Polaroid and silence. It was a picture of what Toby and Lisa had managed to do while you were cleaning the rest of your quarters. They had found the freshly baked batch of your famous oatmeal cookies, got into each of the cannisters of flour, sugar and coffee and not satisfied with that they found the grape jelly. They 'decorated' your freshly cleaned kitchen and themselves with all of the above. I had no words. Wasn't sure you'd ever let me back in the door...but with your kind heart you did. You were such a sweet friend to me...never to be forgotten even though our paths diverged. Todd and Michael have been good friends to one another through the years. You will be missed by all who loved and cared for you. Not sure how your Astros will continue without your ardent support. Goodbye dear friend. I miss you muchly...Kathryn Paquin
