Following the service, a private burial for the immediate family will take place at Crestwood Memorial Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved father.
Toni passed away peacefully on April 24, 2026, at Kindred Hospital in Houston, Texas, surrounded by the love of her family and the thoughts of her many friends.
Born on August 30, 1958, in Glencoe, Alabama, Toni was the only child of William Gary Phillips and Linda Crowder Phillips. Raised in Glencoe and a graduate of Glencoe High School, she graduated from Judson College in Marion, Alabama. It was there that she found her calling in Library Sciences; her lifelong love of books and organization served as the inspiration for a distinguished career that would eventually take her around the globe.
In her early twenties, Toni moved to Houston, Texas, which would remain her home for the rest of her life. A true leader in the field of Records and Information Management, she was known professionally as Toni Schulenburg throughout much of her career. She served with excellence at major corporations including UFI, Sonat, ECT, and Hewlett-Packard, reaching the pinnacle of her profession as a Global Records Manager and a speaker at international conferences. Her dedication to her craft was further recognized through her leadership as President of the Houston ARMA Chapter.
While her professional life was marked by success, her heart was anchored in her family and her love of adventure. In 1996, she met her husband, William Mackain-Bremner, in London. He moved to Houston to be with her, and the two were married in 1999. Toni cherished their annual tradition of traveling back to William's home country, the United Kingdom. She delighted in visiting her in-laws and exploring the beauty of the British Isles—from the vibrant energy of London to the rolling hills of the Wiltshire and Dorset countryside, and quiet stays with dear friends on the south coast. Throughout their marriage, Toni was an unwavering pillar of support for the passions of both her husband and her son.
Like her daddy, Toni was a woman of her word who exemplified integrity, kindness, honesty, and fairness. She treated everyone she encountered with profound respect. A courageous and determined woman, she was always quick to protect those in need and was never afraid to express her views on how things should be done the "right way," yet she possessed the rare gift of doing so without ever causing offense.
In 2004, Toni chose to retire from her corporate career to dedicate herself fully to her greatest joy: raising her son, Coleman. She was a woman of faith and service, notably as a member and past Worthy Matron of the Pearland Chapter #1065, Order of the Eastern Star, in Pearland, Texas.
Toni is survived by her mother, Linda Phillips; her husband, William; and her son, Edward Coleman Schulenburg. She is also survived by her aunts, Glenda Phillips Reynolds, Imogene Easterwood Crowder, and Donna Burgess Boozer; many loving cousins; her father-in-law, Fergus Mackain-Bremner; and her siblings-in-law, Fiona Fieber, Lucy Gilder, and Martin, James, and John Mackain-Bremner.
She was preceded in death by her father, William Gary Phillips; her grandparents, Homer and Florence Crowder, and Arvil and Emma Jo Phillips; her aunt, Grace Crowder Kidd; and her uncles, Donny Crowder, Freddie Crowder, and James Phillips.
The family would like to sincerely thank Barbara Smith, Fay Kelsoe, Mickie Campbell, and Lucy Gilder for their unwavering support and assistance. A special recognition is also extended to the members of Pearland Chapter #1065, Order of the Eastern Star, for their aid during this tragic time; they truly exemplify the compassion and sisterhood that Eastern Star stands for.
At this time, the family asks for your prayers for their comfort. While we have lost a special mother, daughter, and wife, we are comforted by the knowledge that her continued love will accompany us everywhere we go.
The family will receive friends for a visitation from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, Friday, May 1, at Crestwood Funeral Home in Gadsden, AL. Following the funeral service, the interment will be private for the immediate family. Flowers are welcome, or donations may be made in Toni’s memory to Infinite Strength, an organization providing support to single mothers with metastatic breast cancer.
Toni’s radiant smile and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her, from the hills of Alabama to the streets of London and beyond.
