Valton F. Hazelton's Obituary
Valton F. Hazelton was born in Gunter, TX on November 25, 1932, to Roy and Katie Hazelton. He is preceded in death by: His beloved wife, Maricille Wilson Hazelton. Parents: Roy and Katie Hazelton. Brother: Leaman Hazelton. Sister: Freida Holden. Nephew: David Logan. Valton is survived by: Daughters Jana Puckett and Lynne Puckett. Longtime caregiver and friend: Robbie Nelson. Nephew: Curtis Holden and wife, Rachael. Brother: Merrill Hazelton and wife Nita. Sister: LaDelle Watson. Nephews, nieces and cousins: Too many to count. Special friends: Taylor Nelson and Sherri Slomchinski.
Valton was the second of five children. His father was an Evangelist, and he was given a conservative religious upbringing. When he was 13, his family moved from the small town of Gunter to a rural farm east of Gunter on a dirt road, with no phone or water service. Valton had many happy memories of farm life that besides hard work, included hunting, fishing, swimming and playing with friends.
Education was an important part of his life as he earned an associate degree from Decatur Baptist College, a bachelor’s degree from Austin College and a Master of Education degree from Rice University. Valton also served his country honorably in the US Air Force during the Korean War era. He worked for the La Porte school district for most of his professional career and was Principal at La Porte Elementary at the time of his retirement. He earned his private pilot license.
Valton also raised show dogs with his wife Maricille. He enjoyed spending time with his friends at the La Porte Retired School Employees Association. Valton was baptized at the Valley Church of Christ in Gunter when he was very young and was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church of La Porte. The family wishes to thank Sylvan Shores and FUMC of La Porte for their support and care for Valton Hazelton.
Per his wishes, there will not be a traditional funeral but there will be a Memorial-Tribute to his life at FUMC of La Porte on Tuesday June 2nd at 6:00 PM.
